Former teacher and writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes the job of caretaker at a mythical mountain hotel in Colorado. During the winter months, Jack should keep an eye on the stand-alone building. The father of the family sees this as the perfect opportunity to finish his novel in peace. His wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) is looking forward to the time in the secluded hotel. Only the six-year-old son Danny (Danny Llloyd) has his concerns about the whole thing. It does not take long before the dark premonitions and bloody visions, which meet the boy for the first time shortly after moving in, become reality: Father Jack is beginning to lose his mind. Armed with an ax, the madman begins to hunt down his family.
